Want to be part of a positive influence towards our communities?
As Christ Community UMC examines which of our initiatives have been blessed with success and which has not, it becomes clear that our reaching out to the community with God’s love in a practical way, empowers those in the community who wish to help themselves. Thus providing a blessing to the community, to the church, and its volunteers. It becomes apparent that this is the direction that God would have us go at this time and in this community.
We are convinced that God has smiled on our projects from their inception, saying to our congregation of Christ Community United Methodist Church in Avondale Arizona, “Well Done faithful stewards, Well Done”. We will continue to grow and serve the community and the far reaching Westside from the Church on the corner of Central and Western, in Avondale, AZ.
Some of our accomplishments this year are:
- Our Opportunity House – In support of our denominational mission activities we operate “Opportunity House”, which provides after-school tutoring and games for neighborhood children, a summer program for these same children as well as children of the Church, English language instruction for the community, and coaching for adults of the community. In 2010, a total of 15 children and 22 adults participated in these programs which were operated by about 20 different volunteers
- Open Table One – This successful project assists a family in moving from poverty to self-sufficiency by combination of coaching, material assistance, and aid in navigation the social welfare system. In addition to many hours of volunteer service, donations of furniture, bedding, household equipment and a used but serviceable computer, were provided by its Twelve volunteers and many other supporters.
- Open Table Two – This project is under way with a single mother with 3 children, seeking to move from poverty to self-sufficiency through education, improved job skills, and assistance in making better life choices. Ten volunteers are serving on this current table.
- Church support for local food bank through non-perishable food donations that would assist hungry families in our community. We didn’t sell anything or asked for money, just collected the food items for the food pantries.
- Church congregation gathered and sent personal supplies for our troops overseas.
- We also provided shoeboxes of gifts for the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Child Project and continue that practice yearly.
On a global scale, the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit humanitarian aid organization of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR is working in more that 80 countries worldwide, including the U.S. Our mission, grounded in the teaching of Jesus, is to alleviate human suffering – whether caused by war, conflict or natural disaster, with open hearts and minds to all people. UMCOR also responds to natural or civil disasters that are interruptions of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community’s ability to recover on its own.
